Welcome to Caltech! Please find below documentation to assist you in understanding the enrollment process and the academic program for freshmen here at Caltech.
Please complete this information and return the forms to the Registrar's Office at Mail Code 125-87, Pasadena, CA 91125-8700 no later than June 15, 2019. If for some reason you are unable to mail these forms, you may fax them to us at (626) 395-6121. If you FAX the forms, please bring the original patent agreement with you when you come to campus.
Course Selection for Incoming Freshmen
Students should indicate their course preferences by submitting the Institute Requirement Selection Survey by June 15th. Typical course schedules and additional details are also available below to assist you in this process.
Based on the results of your diagnostic
examination, the Registrar's Office will enroll you in the appropriate section
of Mathematics (Ma 1a). You will also be
placed in Chemistry (Ch 1a) and Physics (Ph 1a). These are required courses for
which you must be enrolled. You may choose a freshman Humanities (frosh hum)
course and elective courses including the Freshman Seminar classes. You may
also opt to take a "Frontiers" class(es) and/or Physical Education (PE)
courses. A list of frosh hums, recommended electives, and Freshman Seminar
classes that are offered during the fall term are available within the
Selection survey on the registration website (the above url).
Freshmen cannot enroll in more than 45 units of academic courses (math, chemistry, physics, humanities, and one elective which includes a Freshman Seminar) excluding frontier and PE courses while on Pass/Fail. Typically, freshmen are enrolled in a total of 42-45 units in the first term. You may not enroll in more than 48 units. You can access the on-line course schedule for the days and times that the courses are offered for the fall 2019-20 term. The URL for the course schedule is http://schedules.caltech.edu/FA2019-20.html. Course descriptions can be found in this year's (2018-19) online Caltech Catalog at http://catalog.caltech.edu. The catalog contains general information for undergraduates beginning on page 164- Section Three, and course descriptions beginning on page 434 – Section Five. The new 2019-20 catalog is expected to be online at the end of August.
